PUJ is the area where the kidney's urine-collecting system joins the ureter.
When this area becomes narrowed or blocked, urine cannot drain normally from the kidney to the bladder. This may cause hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidney) and, if untreated, can affect kidney function.
Why might I need Pyeloplasty?
- UPJ obstruction causing significant blockage
- Recurrent flank or abdominal pain
- Repeated urinary tract infections
- Progressive hydronephrosis
- Reduced or deteriorating kidney function
- Kidney stones associated with obstruction
- Significant impairment of urine drainage on a renal scan
How is Pyeloplasty performed?
Pyeloplasty may be performed by:
- Open surgery
- Laparoscopic surgery
- Robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery
DJ stent is placed for 6 weeks following surgery.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is pyeloplasty a major operation?
Yes. Pyeloplasty is a reconstructive urological operation performed under anesthesia. However, laparoscopic and robotic approaches are minimally invasive and generally involve smaller incisions and faster recovery than traditional open surgery.
Will pyeloplasty cure my kidney obstruction?
The purpose of pyeloplasty is to permanently relieve the obstruction by creating a wide connection between the kidney and ureter. It has a high success rate, although recurrence of obstruction can occasionally occur.
Will my kidney function improve after surgery?
If the kidney has been affected by obstruction, kidney function may stabilize or improve after successful relief of the obstruction. The amount of recovery depends on how well the kidney was functioning before surgery and how long the obstruction was present.
4. Why do I need a DJ stent?
The stent keeps the reconstructed urine passage open while it heals and allows urine to drain from the kidney into the bladder.
When can I return to work?
This depends on your occupation and the type of surgery.
People with sedentary work may return sooner, while those whose work involves heavy physical activity may require a longer recovery period. It usually takes a week to return to normal activity.
Can the obstruction come back after pyeloplasty?
Recurrence is uncommon but possible. Follow-up imaging is important to confirm that the kidney continues to drain properly.
Will I need another operation?
Most patients do not require another operation after successful pyeloplasty. Occasionally, persistent or recurrent obstruction may require additional treatment.
Do I need follow-up after pyeloplasty?
Yes. Follow-up is important even if you feel completely well.
